From Tragedy to Tango

Everyone we meet has a different story about what brought them to the dance studio for the first time: a wedding, a lifelong urge, a need for a social outlet, or even stress relief. Sometimes we find ourselves using our dancing as a therapy for our lives.

Ney Melo is one of those people. Read his inspiring story on Yahoo! News: Investment Banker Turns to Tango After 9/11 Survival

Medal Ball

On Friday, June 24th, a group of close to sixty of our students came together to attend our annual Medal Ball, with over half of them graduating to the next tier of instruction here at Arthur Murray. We even had students that progressed from General Variety all the way to our Silver Medalist level. To borrow from the school system for an analogy, General Variety is equal to being in high school, while Bronze would be on par with attending college and Silver is the equivalent of obtaining a Master’s degree.

The event was held at Zandri’s Stillwood Inn of Wallingford, organized with the help of our counterparts at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio of Hamden. In total, there were over a hundred people in attendance for an evening of great dancing, wonderful food, and special professional performances by Joe Monnin & Lacey Escobales, and Frankie Del Aguila & Kelly Stangel, who recently won first place at the Boston Dance-o-Rama in the American Rhythm Rising Star division.

Swing Into Summer

The summer of 2011 is in full swing and while the days are hot, the nights are hotter here at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio of New Britain. As Festival continues, we have a wide variety of activities available to our existing students including the Bye Bye Birdie BBQ on June 10th at 8:30 PM, which will be hosted by our friends over at the Arthur Murray Dance Studio of Glastonbury, the Arthur Murray Dance-o-Rama in beautiful Boston on June 17th through the 19th, and with the Tony Awards Night Medal Ball at Zandri’s Stillwood Inn on June 24th at 7:30 PM.

Interested in getting out on the dance floor to have some fun? No matter what your level of skill – or if you’re completely new to dancing – we have something for you. Prospective students can drop in any Friday at 7:45 PM for one of our newcomers’ classes, where you can get an introduction to ballroom dancing in a fun and friendly environment. Students of all skill levels are welcome to attend our Social Practice sessions on Mondays at 8:30 PM, along with Tuesday and Thursday at 7:45 PM, and Saturday at 10:30 AM. Our intermediate and advanced students are encouraged to speak with their teachers about our Series and Choreography & Technique sessions. This month, Series covers the sensual salsa and runs from 8:30 PM to 9:15 PM every Thursday. Choreography & Technique is on Wednesdays from 8:30 PM to 9:15 PM and focuses on a different dance each week: tango on the 15th, waltz on the 22nd, and mambo on the 29th.

And if all that’s still not enough to get you excited, summer is just starting. July and August will bring more parties, more special lesson opportunities – including samba as our Series dance for the month of July and rumba in August – and more fun! Stay tuned!
